January 11th of 2018 Mark Zuckeberg announced some changes to the bookface. No new fancy levers, bells or whistles. In fact, for those of you that just enjoy checking in with friends or the occasional cute kitty picture you may not notice any difference. If you are like me you just want the salient points

  1. Mark Zuckerberg is convinced that social media is good for your well-being if used for its intended purpose. Bringing people together.
  2. “public content — posts from businesses, brands and media — is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.”
  3. Facebook is changing its goal ” from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.”
  4. “you’ll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media. And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard — it should encourage meaningful interactions between people.”

So, what does this all mean. In a nutshell the game is changing. According to the news feed “Pages making posts that people generally don’t react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution. Pages whose posts prompt conversations between friends will see less of an effect.” and “People who want to see more posts from Pages they follow can choose See First in News Feed Preferences to make sure they always see posts from their favorite Pages.”.
